KHADC Urges Firm Ban: Stop Garos from Leading as Rangbah Shnong – A Powerful Stand for Tradition!
In a significant political move, the Khun Hynniewtrep National Awakening Movement (KHNAM) has urged the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) to prevent individuals from the Garo community from occupying the position of Rangbah Shnong in the villages under Raid Marwet, affiliated with Hima Mylliem. The appeal follows discussions with KHADC Deputy Chief Executive Member, Pynshngain N. Syiem, highlighting that many village leaders in Raid Marwet, notably in Maikholi, Pillangkata A, Iongkhuli, Mawiong, Gambalbari, Jyrmang, Jolsyiem, Rangsakona, Chibra, Nongspung A, and Nongspung C are currently from the Garo community.
Thomas Passah, working president of KHNAM, justified this demand by pointing to the Khasi Hills Autonomous District (Appointment and Succession of Syiem, Deputy Syiem, Electors, and Rangbah Shnong of Mylliem Syiemship) Act, 2007. This legislation specifies that only individuals from the Khasi community are eligible to serve as Rangbah Shnong, a traditional head position.
Passah urged KHADC to take legal action against self-appointed Garo Rangbah Shnongs operating in the border villages within Raid Marwet. During the meeting, Deputy CEM Syiem acknowledged that several villages within Raid Marwet lack a significant Khasi population. In response, KHNAM proposed that the KHADC appoint a Myntri to act as the Rangbah Shnong in these regions.
Additionally, KHNAM has requested KHADC to commission a report from Hima Mylliem concerning land transactions in Raid Marwet over the last five years. This appeal aims to ensure transparency and uphold traditional jurisdictional norms. The issue underscores the broader debate over ethnic and regional representation in governance roles within Meghalaya, highlighting the delicate balance between tradition and contemporary political dynamics.
