Electrifying Words: Powerful Moments and Emotive Speeches at the Republican National Convention
Over four dynamic days, the Republican National Convention in 2024 saw speakers use over 110,000 words to underscore their campaign rhetoric and newly formulated party platform. Economic issues were prominently discussed, with frequent references to rising gas and grocery prices. Senator Rick Scott of Florida warned of $10 a gallon gas if President Biden secures another term. Key economic terms included “skyrocketing,” “shocking,” and references to high costs.
Immigration was another focal point, with speakers highlighting concerns about “millions of illegal aliens” crossing the southern border and alleging a surge in migrant-related crime, including “murderers and rapists” and “criminals and terrorists.”
Donald J. Trump, the most verbose among notable speakers, delivered a lengthy 12,219-word acceptance speech over 92 minutes, marking the longest such speech since at least 1956. His discourse often mirrored the century-old themes from William Howard Taft’s 1908 speech like “business prosperity” and “anti-trust law.”
Speakers like Ted Cruz, Nikki Haley, and Ron DeSantis frequently mentioned Trump, with notable emphasis on immigration terms such as “border” and “illegal.” The word “Biden” was also a recurrent theme, reflecting the opposition stance.
Interestingly, the convention sidestepped controversial topics like abortion and the Affordable Care Act, possibly due to their declining popularity among voters. The term “abortion” was notably absent, although “born and unborn” and “pro-life” appeared sparingly. “Health care” received minimal attention, with only three mentions.
Anticipation now shifts to the Democratic National Convention scheduled for August 19-22 in Chicago, where the party’s nominee, potentially President Biden or another figure, will be determined.
