Vote counting for the Maharashtra and Jharkhand assembly elections is proceeding smoothly. In Maharashtra, early trends indicate a strong lead for the ruling BJP-led Mahayuti alliance over the opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA). With 195 out of 288 seat trends available, the BJP is leading in 88 seats, while the Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena has a lead in 40 seats. The Ajit Pawar-led NCP has taken the lead in 21 seats. The Congress is ahead in 17 seats, NCP Sharad Pawar group in 15, Shiv Sena (UBT) in 9, and other parties are leading in 7 seats. To form a government, a party or alliance needs to secure 145 seats in the 288-seat Maharashtra Assembly, with the current assembly term ending on November 26.
Within the Mahayuti alliance, the BJP contested 149 seats, Shiv Sena 81, and Ajit Pawar’s NCP put forth candidates in 59 constituencies. In the MVA lineup, the Congress contested 101 seats, Shiv Sena (UBT) 95, and NCP (SP) fielded candidates in 86 seats.
In Jharkhand, the peaceful vote count is underway for all 81 seats. Current trends show the BJP-led NDA leading against the ruling Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) alliance. With trends available for 52 seats, the BJP is leading in 27, and NDA ally AJSU in 5 constituencies. The ruling JMM is leading in 13 seats, while Congress is ahead in 4. The RJD has a lead in one seat, with independents or smaller parties leading in 2.
Jharkhand’s elections occurred in two phases on November 13 and 20, witnessing a voter turnout of 67.74%, an increase of 1.65% from 2019. As results continue to emerge, political dynamics could shift, underscoring the competitive landscape of these state elections.
