Tragic Loss: Rescued Bonnet Macaque from Vellore Succumbs Despite Heroic Medical Efforts
A juvenile female Bonnet macaque, rescued from the Vellore Division, passed away at the Arignar Anna Zoological Park’s veterinary hospital on Wednesday. Admitted on October 26, 2024, in Chennai, the macaque was suffering from hind limb paralysis, an abrasion wound on its back, and moderate anemia as revealed by hematology results. In an effort to aid its recovery, the animal was given appropriate bedding, physiotherapy, and passive range of motion exercises. The macaque’s health showed signs of improvement, with experts from TANUVAS involved in its care and close monitoring by the zoo’s veterinary team. However, the animal’s condition began to worsen two days before its death, and despite the efforts, it succumbed. This incident highlights the challenges in wildlife rehabilitation and veterinary care.
