Desperate Plea: Delhi Battles Toxic Air as Government Urges PM for Life-Saving Artificial Rain Intervention
Amidst a severe pollution crisis in New Delhi, Environment Minister Gopal Rai has criticized the central government’s inaction and called for immediate intervention from Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Speaking at a press conference on November 19, 2024, Rai emphasized the urgent need for an emergency meeting to address the escalating smog conditions in the capital. He reiterated the Delhi government’s unheeded appeals for permission to implement artificial rain as a solution to reduce airborne pollutants.
Currently, Delhi is under GRAP Stage IV restrictions, which include limitations on private vehicles and trucks to mitigate vehicular and industrial pollution. Rai insisted that it is the Prime Minister’s moral obligation to take robust steps to alleviate the pollution crisis. He announced plans to contact Union Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav once more, urging collaboration on allowing artificial rain and involving experts from IIT Kanpur in the discussions. Rai also highlighted the necessity of implementing the GRAP across north India and criticized BJP-led states for not adhering to these regulations. He firmly stated that these measures will remain in place as long as pollution levels are critically high.
