Manipur Erupts: Civil Society Rejects NDA Resolution, Issues 24-Hour Ultimatum in Bold Stand
In Manipur, tensions escalate as Meitei civil society organizations dismiss resolutions passed by the ruling party MLAs aimed at addressing the state’s ongoing violence. The unrest follows a series of killings, including six deaths in Jiribam, amid enduring ethnic tensions between the Meitei and Kuki communities.
Chief Minister N. Biren Singh attempted to quell the growing crisis by convening a meeting with NDA legislators, yet 27 out of 38 MLAs were notably absent without explanation. The resolutions call for central government intervention, including a review of the Armed Forces Special Powers Act, a crackdown on Kuki militants allegedly linked to the Jiribam killings, and transferring three crucial cases to the National Investigation Agency. The resolution also seeks to label involved Kuki militants as members of an “unlawful organization.” Any failure to implement these measures within the specified timeframe will prompt the NDA legislators to reassess their strategy in collaboration with the local population, according to the Chief Minister’s Secretariat.
Despite these developments, Meitei civil society remains dissatisfied. Spokesperson for the Coordinating Committee on Manipur Integrity, Khuraijam Athouba, highlighted that the violence is not confined to Jiribam and urged the government to address all insurgent groups under the Suspension of Operation (SoO) agreements, which expired in February. The call for decisive action includes declaring these groups unlawful and invalidating their agreements with the Centre.
The civil society has set a 24-hour ultimatum for the government to revise its resolutions or face intensified protests, including the shutdown of state and central offices.
Meanwhile, Union Home Minister Amit Shah is addressing the escalating conflict from Delhi, ensuring strict measures against those involved in violence. The Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act has been reinstated in six areas, including Jiribam. Since last year, clashes between Meiteis and Kuki-Zo groups have resulted in over 200 deaths and the displacement of thousands.
