Shocking Truth Revealed: Unmasking the Hidden Culprit Behind Delhi’s Dire Pollution Crisis!
The severe pollution crisis choking Delhi has taken a new turn, highlighting sources other than stubble burning or vehicle emissions. A recent study by the Centre for Research on Energy and Clean Air (CREA) indicates that thermal power plants in the National Capital Region (NCR) contribute significantly to the worsening air quality, emitting 281 kilotons of sulfur dioxide (SO₂) annually. This output is 16 times higher than the 17.8 kilotons of pollution from the burning of 8.9 million tons of stubble in Punjab and Haryana.
As Delhi’s Air Quality Index (AQI) remains perilously high at 488, categorized as ‘severe plus,’ the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) Phase 4 has been implemented to curb pollution. Meanwhile, meteorological factors like calm winds and plummeting temperatures have exacerbated the situation, trapping pollutants and making dispersion difficult. The coldest night of the season was recorded on Monday, with temperatures dipping to 12.3 degrees Celsius.
In response to the health threat posed by toxic smog, Chief Justice Sanjiv Khanna announced that virtual hearings would be encouraged in the national capital region courts to limit exposure. The decision follows urgent appeals by legal professionals such as Kapil Sibal, the president of the Supreme Court Bar Association, and other prominent lawyers.
The findings from CREA, combined with the judicial response, underscore the critical issue of pollution sources other than agriculture and vehicle emissions, shifting the focus to industrial contributions in the ongoing battle against Delhi’s toxic air.
