Empowering Journey: CM’s Generous Funding Fuels New Beginnings for Halfway Home with Vehicle Purchase
Shillong, Nov 18: In a significant step towards supporting mental health rehabilitation efforts in Meghalaya, Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma handed over a cheque worth Rs 6,07,336 to Dr. H.H. Mohrmen, the Secretary of the Society for Urban and Rural Empowerment (SURE). The presentation took place at the Chief Minister’s Office in Shillong. This contribution, sourced from the Chief Minister’s Special Development Fund 2024-25 (NGO Category), is designated for acquiring a vehicle for the Halfway Home located in Jowai, Sabahmuswang, West Jaintia Hills. The Halfway Home, a critical initiative by SURE, serves as a rehabilitation center for individuals with mental illness who have been cured, but lack family support or housing. Opened on June 28, 2023, the facility has already accomplished relocating two residents back to their families, a feat unmatched by the other three state-sponsored homes by the Directorate of Social Welfare, Shillong. Representing the Halfway Home at the ceremony were Project Coordinator Niwanka Shylla and Social Worker Ilasiewdor Gashnga. In attendance was also Dr. H. Niang, Block Development Officer of Thadlaskein Development Block. Chief Minister Sangma applauded the staff’s dedication and extended his gratitude to SURE for providing invaluable services to the community. He expressed his best wishes for their continued success in fostering mental health and societal reintegration for marginalized individuals. This generous funding highlights the government’s commitment to enhancing infrastructure and supporting NGOs that make a tangible impact on society.
