Empowered Voices: Tribal Gadchiroli Women Tackle Liquor Menace Over Naxalism
In the scenic yet challenging landscape of Gadchiroli, Maharashtra—a region long influenced by Naxal presence—Shubha Swapnil Tiwade, a dedicated farm laborer, races against time to harvest paddy on her five acres. Earning a daily wage between Rs 120 and Rs 250, depending on the workload, her efforts underscore the crucial role paddy cultivation plays in sustaining village life in this tribal belt.
Despite the region’s notoriety for Naxal influence, villagers’ primary concern is the pervasive issue of alcohol abuse. Although a liquor ban has existed in Gadchiroli since 1993, its impact remains limited as men easily obtain alcohol from nearby Chandrapur, creating economic hardships for families. Women across this area demand a comprehensive liquor ban, prioritizing this over concerns about Naxalism, which they claim does not affect their daily lives.
The looming Maharashtra Assembly elections bring this issue into focus, as women vow to support parties advocating for a stringent liquor ban. The political tussle is marked by the BJP’s commitment to reinstating a liquor ban in Chandrapur, directly challenging opposition figures like Vijay Wadettiwar of Congress. Meanwhile, elections are heating up across the region’s constituencies, with candidates from BJP, Congress, NCP, and more vying for influence.
In urban areas like Heti village, the pressing issue remains unemployment, leaving young people restless and in search of opportunities. Some anticipate that the BJP’s focus on development—highlighted by mega projects tapping into the region’s rich natural resources—will bring much-needed progress. Voices like Atul Deshkar, the BJP’s district in-charge, emphasize the party’s intent to address both Naxalism and economic stagnation, envisioning a future of prosperity for Gadchiroli.
