Urgent Plea: Supreme Court to Tackle Delhi’s Dire Air Pollution Crisis and Enforce Life-Saving Measures
Delhi faced severe air pollution on November 17, 2024, with the Air Quality Index (AQI) hitting 429, indicating toxic air conditions. The capital has been grappling with escalating pollution, prompting the Supreme Court to address the crisis urgently. A hearing is set for November 18, 2024, where Justices Abhay S Oka and Augustine George Masih will examine a plea to implement stringent anti-pollution measures.
The matter was prioritized after senior advocate Aparajita Singh, serving as an amicus curiae, highlighted the dire pollution levels and urged for immediate court intervention. The Supreme Court had previously emphasized the importance of maintaining a pollution-free environment, criticizing breaches of its firecracker ban during Diwali and asserting citizens’ right to clean air under Article 21 of the Constitution.
The Commission of Air Quality Management (CAQM) has been requested to detail the actions planned to combat pollution in the capital and surrounding areas. The court’s commitment underscores the necessity of safeguarding public health against the backdrop of deteriorating air quality, with significant decisions expected to be made in the forthcoming hearing.
