Experience the Magic: Sikkim’s Pakyong Literary Festival Ignites Minds with Inspiring Celebrations and Profound Dialogues
The Pakyong Literary Festival 2024 launched on November 17 at Lampokhari Lake in Aritar, setting the stage for a dynamic two-day event. This year, the festival holds special importance as it celebrates the 50th anniversary of Sikkim’s statehood and is organized by the District Administrative Centre of Pakyong district.
The opening ceremony featured Puran Kumar Gurung, Sikkim’s Minister of Agriculture, Horticulture, Animal Husbandry & Veterinary Services, and Fisheries Development, as the chief guest. He was joined by Pamin Lepcha, MLA of Gnathang Machong, who served as the guest of honor, alongside Zilla Adhyaksha Laden Lhamu Bhutia and Zilla Upadhyaksha Prabha Pradhan.
Focusing on social themes like “Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao” and “Nasha Mukt Bharat, Nasha Mukt Sikkim,” the festival aims to create awareness while fostering intellectual discussions. After the inaugural event, Gurung and other dignitaries explored exhibitions showcasing books, products from Self-Help Groups, and interactive spaces designed for student competitions.
The festival kicked off with a stimulating panel discussion titled “Why Don’t Students Read More?” where panelists delivered concise two-minute insights followed by an engaging debate, offering fresh perspectives on the reading challenges faced by the youth.
In addition to the discussions, the festival features a variety of student competitions, including a turncoat debate where participants made compelling arguments on diverse subjects. An open story-writing contest further encouraged students to demonstrate their creativity and expressive skills.
Throughout the day, the festival will continue to engage participants with a series of competitions, exhibitions, and activities designed to spark meaningful conversations. The event attracts a diverse audience, including the District Collector of Pakyong, the Additional District Collector, the ADC (Development), the Sub-Divisional Magistrate, as well as department heads, teachers, and students, promising to be a significant cultural highlight in the region.
