This comes after Patel was overlooked for the position of Director of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) during Trump’s term. If appointed, Patel could become the highest-ranking Indian American in the Trump administration, although it would not be a Cabinet-level role.

Patel, a staunch Trump loyalist, shares the former president’s belief that the 2020 election was unlawfully taken from Trump. Both have called for significant changes within government agencies, with Patel advocating for “drastic measures” to overhaul the FBI, which he views as compromised. Despite his close relationships within the Trump circle, Patel’s path to the FBI’s directorship is uncertain. The current director, Christopher Wray, appointed by Trump in 2017 and retained by President Biden, would need to vacate the role to open the opportunity for Patel, who would then require Senate confirmation.

Patel’s career began as a public defender before transitioning to a Justice Department attorney specializing in national security. He later served as a national security advisor for the House Intelligence Committee, where his work examining alleged Russian interference in the 2016 election caught White House attention. His Indian heritage and strong connections to India are notable personal aspects, adding a layer of representation to his potential new position.
