Prime Minister Narendra Modi made a historic visit to Abuja, Nigeria, on Sunday, being the first Indian prime minister to visit the West African nation in 17 years. This marks the beginning of PM Modi’s three-nation tour aimed at enhancing India’s global partnerships. Upon arrival, he received a ceremonial welcome and was presented with the “Key to the City” of Abuja by Nigeria’s minister for the federal capital territory, Nyesom Ezenwo Wike. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) emphasized that this gesture symbolizes the trust and honor bestowed upon PM Modi by the Nigerian people. The visit aims to advance the strategic partnership formed between India and Nigeria in 2007, focusing on key sectors like economy, energy, and defense. PM Modi also planned to engage with the Indian community in Nigeria, acknowledging their role in strengthening bilateral ties.
Expressing his enthusiasm, PM Modi mentioned in his departure statement that he looked forward to connecting with the Indian community and Nigerian friends who had welcomed him warmly in Hindi. The visit underscores the ongoing strategic partnership based on shared values of democracy and pluralism.
Following the Nigerian visit, PM Modi will head to Brazil to participate in the 19th G20 Summit in Rio de Janeiro, alongside leaders like Chinese President Xi Jinping and US President Joe Biden. The summit will take place from November 18-19. Concluding his tour, PM Modi will visit Guyana from November 19 to 21 at the invitation of President Mohamed Irfaan Ali. This visit will be the first by an Indian prime minister to Guyana in over 50 years, highlighting India’s commitment to strengthening relations with the Caribbean nation.
