During the Breakthrough Prize ceremony in Los Angeles, Musk expressed his support for Lutnick, who is the CEO and chairman of Cantor Fitzgerald, BGC Group, and Newmark Group, indicating that Lutnick is someone who could “actually enact change.” Musk contrasted this with another leading candidate, Scott Bessent, founder and CEO of Key Square Group, whom he described as a “business-as-usual choice.” Musk voiced concerns about the status quo, suggesting that maintaining it could drive America towards financial ruin, and called for more public input to inform Trump’s decision.

Currently, neither Lutnick nor Bessent has been officially chosen for the Treasury position, as Trump has yet to announce his pick, according to Trump transition spokesperson Karoline Leavitt. While Lutnick shares a long-standing relationship with Trump and is actively involved in selecting cabinet candidates, Bessent contributed significantly to Trump’s 2024 campaign as a key economic advisor. Bessent also has the backing of influential figures such as Republican Senator Lindsey Graham of South Carolina, who praised his qualifications.

Both candidates bring valuable connections and expertise, representing diverging approaches to economic policy in Trump’s second administration. The decision regarding the Treasury secretary position remains pending, with Trump expected to make an official announcement following careful evaluation.
