Unyielding Stand: CM Vows to End Intolerable Attacks on Journalists
Agartala, 16th November 2024: Chief Minister Prof. Dr. Manik Saha has declared a zero-tolerance policy towards attacks on journalists in Tripura, stating that "the law will take its own course" in such instances. Speaking at the Sharad Samman program organized by Headlines Tripura at Rabindra Shatabarshiki Bhavan, Dr. Saha emphasized the importance of media delivering impartial and accurate news, which benefits both the state and nation.
During his address, coinciding with National Press Day, the Chief Minister congratulated journalists and media professionals for their contributions. He highlighted the challenges faced by Headlines Tripura before 2018 and praised the channel’s persistence in providing truthful news. Dr. Saha stressed that beyond reporting news, media has a societal role, exemplified by initiatives like the Sharad Samman.
Acknowledging that the government can make mistakes, Dr. Saha urged the media to responsibly highlight errors without bias, ensuring that they neither unjustly tarnish nor unduly favor anyone. He assured that any government errors identified by the media would be addressed.
Dr. Saha commented on the media’s evolution across platforms, noting its free accessibility and vital role in societal change, which cannot be achieved by the government alone. Since assuming office, he has acted promptly on reports of journalist attacks, reiterating that such incidents will not be tolerated. He assured that the law and order situation in Tripura remains stable despite opposition claims.
The event witnessed participation from prominent figures, including Rajya Sabha MP Rajib Bhattacharya, Power Minister Ratan Lal Nath, Transport Minister Sushanta Chowdhury, and others, underlining the event’s significance in fostering discussions on the media’s critical role in society.
