Desperate Plea: Saleng Urges President’s Intervention in NEHU Crisis
Congress MP Saleng A Sangma has called on President Droupadi Murmu to address the ongoing issues at North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU) in Meghalaya. In a letter to the President, Sangma highlighted concerns over alleged appointments of underqualified individuals to key administrative roles, which he believes undermine the university’s integrity. He urged the removal of the current Vice Chancellor, Prabha Shankar Shukla, as part of efforts to restore the institution’s academic and administrative standards.
Both the North-Eastern Hill University Teachers’ Association (NEHUTA) and the Meghalaya Tribal Teachers’ Association (MeTTA) have raised concerns about the ineffective administration of the university. They cited problems such as academic career stagnation, inadequate hostel facilities, and poor Wi-Fi connectivity.
Congress has accused the RSS and BJP of trying to influence NEHU by strategically appointing individuals aligned with their ideologies to important positions, a move that party leader Ronnie V Lyngdoh claims has led to unrest since the BJP’s rise to power in Meghalaya. The alleged infiltration is seen as an attempt to propagate their ideology within the university.
In related news, a police officer in Assam was suspended for a violent assault on a delivery man in Guwahati, and a CBI probe into an online trading scam led to raids on 92 locations, resulting in one arrest.
