Breaking News: Centre Shockingly Reimposes AFSPA in Manipur’s Peaceful Jiribam and Six Areas – A Critical Turning Point for Northeast
The Indian government has reinstated the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) in six police station areas of Manipur, including the conflict-prone Jiribam district, citing the ongoing ethnic violence in the state. The Union Home Ministry’s notification highlights the unstable conditions necessitating this decision. AFSPA, a law deemed controversial for its extensive powers, classifies areas as “disturbed,” empowering armed forces to conduct searches, make arrests, and use force if deemed necessary for maintaining public order. The areas affected by this reimposition include Sekmai and Lamsang in the Imphal West district, Lamlai in Imphal East, Jiribam district, Leimakhong in Kangpokpi district, and Moirang in Bishnupur district.
Earlier, on October 1, the Manipur government imposed AFSPA statewide but exempted 19 police station areas, including the six now under AFSPA again. The exclusion list originally comprised Imphal, Lamphal, City, Singjamei, Sekmai, Lamsang, Patsoi, Wangoi, Porompat, Heingang, Lamlai, Irilbung, Leimakhong, Thoubal, Bishnupur, Nambol, Moirang, Kakching, and Jiribam. The law has been the subject of widespread protests, with many calling for its complete withdrawal from regions like the Northeast and Jammu and Kashmir due to alleged harsh provisions. Notably, Manipuri activist Irom Chanu Sharmila protested against AFSPA for 16 years through a hunger strike that ended in 2016.
Recent clashes in Manipur highlight the region’s continued unrest. According to police reports, a gun battle in Jiribam resulted in the deaths of 10 suspected militants following an attack on a police station and neighboring CRPF camp. Ethnic violence has claimed over 200 lives and displaced thousands in the conflict between Imphal Valley’s Meiteis and the neighboring hills-based Kuki-Zo groups since May of the previous year. Talks to address issues surrounding newly created districts in Manipur are scheduled for November 13.
