Triumphant GOP Secures House Majority: A Historic Win Ignites Republican Trifecta
Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., oversaw proceedings at the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee on July 15, 2024, as Republicans were projected to maintain control of the House of Representatives, according to NBC News. This announcement came shortly after President-elect Donald Trump secured a victory over Vice President Kamala Harris, and the GOP gained a Senate majority.
Prior to the election, Republicans aimed to strengthen their narrow majority in the House, which stood at 220 seats against the Democrats’ 212. Democrats required a net gain of four seats to reclaim House control due to existing vacancies, which made the chamber’s votes fewer than the full 435.
Despite raising significant funds in 25 of 26 “toss-up” races, as per the Cook Political Report, Democrats fell short of the 218 seats needed. Key losses included Pennsylvania’s 8th and 7th Districts, where Republicans Rob Bresnahan and Ryan Mackenzie defeated Democratic incumbents, as well as Michigan’s 7th District, where Tom Barret secured a seat previously held by a Democrat.
The Republican-controlled Congress will tackle several critical issues, such as considering the extension of the 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, with Trump advocating not only for its continuation but further reductions. Additionally, enhanced subsidies under the Affordable Care Act require attention before their expiration at the end of 2025. An impending debt ceiling confrontation also looms.
