Heart-Wrenching Tragedy: Brutal Torture and Murder of Jiribam Woman Devastates Manipur Community
In a tragic incident in Manipur’s Jiribam district, a 31-year-old mother of three was brutally killed by armed intruders in her village home. Autopsy results from Silchar Medical College and Hospital revealed that the woman was subjected to severe torture and sustained burns while still alive, leading to her death. Due to the extent of the burning, forensic experts were unable to collect vaginal smears to confirm allegations of sexual assault, as reported by her husband. He accused the intruders of brutally murdering his wife after possibly assaulting her at their residence in Zairawn village, an event reminiscent of the ethnic conflict’s initial chaos marked by violence against women.
The autopsy further indicated that the victim suffered from 99% burns, with body parts missing or unrecognizable, including her right upper limb and parts of both lower limbs. A wound was noted on her right thigh, alongside a metallic nail embedded in her left thigh. Transport challenges amid the ongoing ethnic crisis necessitated moving the charred body to Silchar for forensic examination rather than the state capital Imphal.
The assailants remain unidentified but are suspected to be from the valley region. The heinous act has drawn widespread condemnation from several Kuki-Zo organizations, who labeled it barbaric. Demanding justice, local Indigenous groups and leaders have called for immediate intervention to protect the Kuki-Zomi-Hmar communities in the affected regions and the arrest of the perpetrators responsible for this gruesome crime.
