Unleashing Empowerment: How Press Freedom and Gender Equity Ignite Change at AWJF’s Pre-National Press Day Event
Guwahati, Nov. 13: The Assam Women Journalists’ Forum (AWJF) hosted a Pre-National Press Day discussion on “Press Freedom and Gender Equality in New Age Media” at the Gauhati Press Club, aimed at addressing pressing issues in modern journalism. The event, held on Wednesday, saw Dr. Andrew Fleming, British Deputy High Commissioner to East and Northeast India, as the Chief Guest. Dr. Fleming emphasized the crucial role of press freedom and gender equality, lauding Northeast women journalists for fostering a supportive community. He encouraged empowering women journalists to break barriers and assume leadership roles.
Keynote speakers included Mrinal Talukdar, Consulting Editor and Senior Journalist, and Sangeeta Barooah Pisharoty, National Affairs Editor at The Wire, who shared insights on the evolving role of journalists, press freedom challenges, and issues faced by female journalists. Pisharoty highlighted the ongoing struggle for gender balance in newsrooms, both nationally and in Assam, urging women to create space and take a stand. Talukdar addressed the disparity in practicing gender equity and press freedom, particularly in Assam’s media sector.
AWJF President Durba Ghosh stressed the importance of solidarity among female journalists, noting the group’s commitment to helping them adapt to the dynamic media landscape. Conducted by AWJF General Secretary Nasreen Habib, the event included a vote of thanks by Organizing Secretary Tora Agarwala.
The discussion was part of AWJF’s mission to foster an inclusive media environment that champions equality, empowerment, and excellence. Dr. Fleming’s presence underscored the value of international cooperation in tackling gender and press-related challenges, reinforcing the need for ongoing dialogue and action in the pursuit of media equity.
