Dimapur, November 13, 2024: The Hornbill Festival, known as the ‘Festival of Festivals,’ is set to kick off on December 1 at the Naga Heritage Village in Kisama, near Kohima. Celebrating its 25th year, this 10-day festival is India’s largest tribute to tribal heritage, drawing global visitors eager to delve into its vibrant traditions, music, and folklore.
This year, two Welsh artists, Gareth Bonello and Mari Mathias, will grace the festival, showcasing the cultural ties between Wales and Nagaland. Mari Mathias, known for her contemporary take on traditional Welsh folk melodies, will perform solo and collaborate with Indian musician Seyievinuo Chuzho, incorporating a new Welsh verse into one of Chuzho’s songs. Meanwhile, Gareth Bonello, performing as The Gentle Good, will return to the Hornbill Festival after his 2013 performance. Renowned for his enchanting melodies and intricate guitar arrangements, Bonello will also collaborate with the Khasi-Cymru Collective to create new music and poetry in both Khasi and Welsh languages.
Wales has been named a designated partner in this year’s festival, marking the culmination of the Wales in India 2024 initiative—a year-long series aimed at strengthening cultural ties. This partnership, recognized during Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio’s visit to Wales, was supported by the British Council, the Welsh Government, and Wales Arts International. Together, they have funded five cultural projects focused on enhancing relationships between artists from Wales, Nagaland, and the broader Northeast India over the next six months.
The Hornbill Festival promises a rich, immersive experience that highlights the dynamic cultural exchange fostered by these international collaborations.
