Union Minister Empowers Arunachal Pradesh with Ambitious Plans for Enhanced Fish Production
Union Minister Rajiv Ranjan Singh has highlighted the potential for advancing the fisheries sector in Arunachal Pradesh, citing the state’s rich natural resources and favorable conditions for inland fish production. Currently on a three-day visit, Singh assessed various sectors within his ministry and identified growth opportunities in Arunachal’s fishery infrastructure.
At a press conference at the Civil Secretariat, Singh, who oversees Fisheries, Animal Husbandry, and Dairying, noted India’s progress in fisheries under Prime Minister Narendra Modi, marking an increase in annual fish production from 96 lakh tonnes in 2014 to 176 lakh tonnes, with 132 lakh tonnes derived from inland fisheries.
Singh emphasized that Arunachal Pradesh, with its abundant ponds and water bodies, could achieve self-sufficiency in fish production and potentially become an exporter. He urged the state to exploit central government schemes such as the Fishery Infrastructure Development Fund and Pradhan Mantri Matsya Kishan Samridhi Yojana for boosting productivity and expanding infrastructure.
He proposed specific measures to elevate Arunachal’s fish production from the current 10,000 tonnes to a target of 30,000 tonnes. These strategies include adopting modern technology, diversifying fish species, and setting up a training framework for local officials. Singh announced plans for officials to be trained at the Central Institute of Freshwater Aquaculture (CIFA) in Odisha, facilitating technology transfer and multi-layer fish farming techniques.
Singh also underscored the role of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) in offering innovative research solutions for fisheries that can be adapted in Arunachal Pradesh, enhancing fish production, creating youth employment, and opening avenues for exports.
To bolster local markets, Singh revealed ₹19.5 crore has been sanctioned for a modern fish market in Ziro, Lower Subansiri district, and praised the state government’s commitment to this initiative. He reaffirmed the Modi administration’s dedication to making the Northeast self-reliant and supporting regional development projects.
