Fiery Exchange: Akhilesh Yadav’s Bold Jabs at Yogi Adityanath Ignite Political Drama
Samajwadi Party leader Akhilesh Yadav has criticized the Yogi Adityanath government’s use of “bulldozer justice,” welcoming the Supreme Court’s recent judgment on the matter. Speaking at a rally in Kanpur, Yadav highlighted the court’s stance against the controversial practice, which had become emblematic of the Uttar Pradesh administration’s crackdown on alleged criminals. He praised the Supreme Court for its decision and criticized the government for using bulldozers to demolish homes, stating, “The bulldozer will remain in the garage now, and no poor’s home will be razed.”
The Supreme Court’s ruling was delivered by Justices BR Gavai and KV Viswanathan, who laid down guidelines for demolition practices. The judgment came in response to petitions challenging the use of bulldozers to target individuals accused of crimes, a trend that had spread to several states, including Uttar Pradesh. The court emphasized that the Executive cannot replace the Judiciary and highlighted the importance of legal processes that should not prejudge an individual’s guilt.
Echoing poet Pradeep’s words included in the judgment, Yadav remarked on the importance of housing and dreams, providing what he saw as strong criticism of the government’s actions. Meanwhile, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath defended the practice, asserting that the government targeted the land mafia, not innocents.
The Supreme Court warned that failure to adhere to its directives would result in contempt proceedings but clarified that its guidelines would not apply to unauthorized structures in public areas or those already ordered for demolition by a court. The court underscored the grave nature of demolishing homes without due process, describing it as reminiscent of a lawless state where “might was right.”
