Outrage Erupts as Guwahati’s Lachit Ghat Remains Neglected Post Chhath Puja – Locals Demand Action from GMC

GUWAHATI: In the aftermath of the Chhath Puja celebrations, Lachit Ghat in Guwahati remains cluttered with debris, sparking dissatisfaction among locals who blame the Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) for neglecting sanitation duties. Despite the ghat’s significance as a cultural venue and its ability to attract numerous devotees, effective clean-up operations seem to be lacking, prompting questions about GMC’s role in managing public spaces.

Residents and commuters express growing concerns over the litter problem at Lachit Ghat. Ranjita Das, a daily commuter, criticized the government’s handling of cleanliness efforts, highlighting the absence of post-event clean-up. She noted, “They permit religious events but abandon the area afterward, neglecting the cleanup process.”

This sentiment echoes through the community, as residents observe a consistent disregard for maintaining cleanliness at the ghats. Complaints about garbage, decaying offerings, and celebration remnants being left for extended periods have been repeatedly ignored by authorities. Rajesh Kumar, from Fancy Bazaar, lamented the poor upkeep, emphasizing its impact on tourism and taxpayer sentiments. He remarked, “Tourists might be put off by the mess, and despite promises of city upgrades, basic cleanliness is not prioritized.”

Conversely, a senior GMC official defended the agency, stating they had ensured the area was in pristine condition before Chhath Puja began. While acknowledging the post-event mess, the official urged devotees to share in maintaining the cleanliness of the site, contending that it is a mutual responsibility.

The state of Lachit Ghat raises broader issues about the effectiveness of current urban maintenance strategies and highlights the need for better coordination between public agencies and citizens in preserving community spaces.
