Revolutionary Impact: How MOTHER’s Compassionate Initiative is Dramatically Reducing MMR & IMR Rates in Meghalaya
In recent strides toward improved maternal health, Meghalaya has significantly reduced its Maternal Mortality Rate (MMR), according to the Health Management Information System. The state reported 107 maternal deaths per 100,000 live births in January 2023, a positive decrease from 243 in 2020-2021 and 155 in 2022-2023. As of now, 98 maternal deaths have occurred this year, with complications split across delivery stages.
Key to this success is the “Rescue Mission,” initiated in November 2020, which employs a “Problem-Driven Iterative Adaptation” strategy. This empowers local leaders to create context-specific solutions, targeting challenges like geographical and economic barriers and inadequate birth spacing. The initiative includes community engagement, establishing transit homes for expectant mothers, and supporting Self-Help Groups (SHGs) to alleviate poverty-related healthcare access issues.
Addressing teenage pregnancy, the Health Department’s collaborative work across various sectors, with programs like MPOWER and the Early Childhood Development Mission, aims to tackle socio-cultural norms and educational gaps. These initiatives, backed by international funding, focus on empowering adolescents and providing high-quality early interventions.
The state has also streamlined healthcare delivery through the creation of the State Health Mission and State Health Society, bolstering health program execution. Efforts to enhance clinical support include training doctors in rural areas through Tamil Nadu partnerships.
Meghalayan Medical Drugs and Services Limited (MMDSL) ensures an efficient drug supply chain across the state, backed by a robust procurement process and a fresh essential drugs list. This initiative has helped reduce medicine costs by 40%, enhancing healthcare accessibility.
Through these multifaceted efforts, Meghalaya is making substantial progress in public health, setting a strong foundation for continued growth and improvement.
