Transformative Initiative: Sonitpur District’s Bold Move Towards Tobacco-Free Villages Ignites Hope in Christian Communities
In a progressive move towards public health, Sonitpur district in Assam, India, has embarked on an initiative to create ‘tobacco-free villages.’ This effort is part of the National Tobacco-free Youth Campaign 2.0, which runs from September 24 to November 24. The campaign is driven by influential appeals from church and community leaders, who have successfully convinced indigenous populations in Christian-majority tribal villages to abstain from tobacco use.
This initiative has already seen impressive results in three villages — Phulaguri Garo Gaon, Phulaguri Nyshi Gaon, and Chengelimara Garo Gaon, which house Garo and Nyshi tribal communities. These villages have shown a remarkable commitment to removing tobacco products from the community, with local village development committees persuading shopkeepers to stop selling these products. This voluntary reduction in tobacco sales is attributed to strong advocacy from religious and communal figures.
Achyut Hazarika, the district nodal officer for tobacco control, noted the significant decrease in tobacco users, emphasizing that while legal enforcement might be limited, the campaign’s success lies in voluntary community action. The district has also declared 140 school areas as tobacco-free zones and banned tobacco use in prominent local spots, such as the Brahmaputra riverbank, to further prevent exposure.
This stands as a testament to the effectiveness of community engagement and leadership in promoting public health and protecting younger generations from the harmful effects of tobacco. The campaign seeks to achieve the tobacco-free status for 20 villages, building on the momentum gained from the initial successful attempts. Through this model of engagement, Sonitpur district hopes to serve as an example for other regions aiming to reduce tobacco consumption at the grassroots level.
