Urgent Call to Action: Manipur Civil Society Demands 24-Hour Shutdown Amid Escalating Violence
A coalition of 13 civil society organizations has announced a 24-hour shutdown from 6:00 pm on November 12 to 6:00 pm on November 13, in response to a recent increase in violence in the peripheral areas of Manipur. The protest is led by groups including the International Peace and Social Advancement (IPSA), Peoples’ Action for National Democratic Movement (PAMDM), and Kangleipak Lamjing Apunba Meira Paibi Lup (Kanglamei), who are condemning violent attacks by armed Kuki militants in the region.
During a press conference at the IPSA office in Keishampat, the coalition urged immediate government intervention to curb the violence and restore safety in affected communities. They specifically highlighted the abduction of several individuals in the Jiribam district, calling for urgent government action to ensure their release.
A group spokesperson stated, “We cannot stand by while innocent lives are being jeopardized by these attacks.” The coalition criticized the state government and law enforcement agencies for inadequate responses to the escalating crisis, leaving many residents fearful for their safety.
The shutdown intends to highlight the urgency of the situation, demanding that the government swiftly restore peace and order. The organizations emphasize this strike is not only a condemnation of recent militant activities but also a call for stronger government measures to protect citizens and ensure justice.
The coalition has pledged continued efforts until the situation improves, warning that protests will persist until effective measures are implemented to prevent further violence and abductions. The call for action is a pressing reminder of the need for decisive leadership to ensure the protection and well-being of Manipur’s communities.
Additionally, the Manipur Police have intensified efforts to locate six missing persons following a militant attack in Jiribam, underscoring the need for urgent and effective government action in the crisis.
