Major Security Triumph in Upper Assam: Joint Operation Decimates ULFA (I) Network, Unearths IEDs Before Key Events
In a crucial move to counter insurgency in Assam, security forces made significant headway with “Operation Crackdown.” This joint operation, carried out by the 23 Assam Rifles, Assam Police, Military Intelligence from Kolkata, and the 166 Territorial Army Battalion, successfully captured two Improvised Explosive Device (IED) specialists and confiscated two IEDs allegedly planted by suspected cadres of the United Liberation Front of Asom (Independent), commonly known as ULFA (I), in Upper Assam.
Launched on November 12, 2024, the operation is part of a broader strategy aimed at curtailing insurgency activities in the region. It followed an extensive intelligence-gathering campaign conducted between October 25 and November 11, 2024. During this period, authorities identified and dismantled plans for potential attacks that were to coincide with significant forthcoming events, such as the ULFA (I) Protest Day on November 28, and Republic Day celebrations on January 26, 2025.
The security forces, through precise intelligence, discovered the IEDs in Sonari of the Charaideo district and Sibsagar. Beyond capturing the IED experts, the operation also led to the arrest of 18 Over Ground Workers and two active ULFA (I) cadres, further crippling the insurgent network. The coordinated effort is ongoing, with security personnel maintaining a keen focus on eliminating future threats.
This operation is timely, considering the upcoming by-elections scheduled for November 13, 2024, across five assembly constituencies in Assam. The developments come amidst heightened security measures in the region, reflecting a robust stance against insurgency. The success of Operation Crackdown underscores the commitment of the security forces to ensuring peace and stability during this critical period.
