Shocking QR Code Scam: Mizoram Man Arrested for Brazen Fraud at Fuel Station
In Aizawl, Mizoram, a 23-year-old man named H. Lalrohlua from Lunglei’s Hrangchalkawn has been arrested for replacing a QR code sticker at a state-owned petrol station with his own, thereby stealing money. Lalrohlua, residing in the Armed Veng area of Aizawl, was apprehended after a complaint from the manager of the Mizofed petrol pump at Treasury Square about the tampered QR code used for transactions.
The police launched an investigation, leading to Lalrohlua being taken into custody on suspicion. During questioning, he confessed to the crime, despite having no prior criminal record. Lalrohlua admitted to printing his Google Pay QR code and placing it over the original one at the filling station. As a result, he received Rs 2,315 through three different transactions. However, he did pay back Rs 890 to one of the payees while spending the remaining amount.
The Mizoram Inspector General of Police (Law and Order), Lalbiakthanga Khiangte, provided details on the incident, emphasizing the police’s swift action in resolving the case. This incident serves as a cautionary tale about the potential vulnerabilities in digital payment systems and the importance of vigilance in ensuring secure transactions.
