Heartbreaking Tragedy in Manipur: Alarming Attacks on Women Stir Outrage | Guwahati News
In a tragic series of events in Manipur, violence erupted in two districts resulting in the deaths of two women within 48 hours. On Thursday night in Jiribam district, a 31-year-old tribal woman, a mother of three, was brutally assaulted and immolated in what is suspected to be a hate crime. Armed assailants, believed to be valley-based militants, attacked Zairawn village, setting fire to 17 homes. A case has been registered following a report by the victim’s husband, alleging racial, communal, and gender-motivated crimes, including rape and murder.
In a separate incident on Saturday in Bishnupur district, 27-year-old Sapam Sofia was shot dead by suspected hill-based militants while she was harvesting paddy with other farmers. The attackers, firing from nearby hills, targeted the group from about 100 meters away. Sofia’s death occurred at around 11 am, while the other farmers narrowly escaped. Her body was later recovered by village volunteers fearing additional attacks.
Police have not yet identified the assailants but indicate these incidents may aim to destabilize the region. Security forces responded quickly to the shooting, starting retaliatory measures, but no further casualties have been reported. These attacks highlight the ongoing tension and violence in the region as authorities work to maintain peace and security.
