Urgent Call: RRAG Demands Suspension of Bangladesh’s Human Rights Commission Membership from GANHRI – Northeast News
The Rights and Risk Analysis Group (RRAG) has called for the immediate suspension of the National Human Rights Commission of Bangladesh from the Global Alliance of National Human Rights Institutions (GANHRI). This urgent appeal follows the forced resignation of the entire Commission on November 7, 2024, effectively leaving it defunct. The mass resignation included Chairman Kamal Uddin Ahmed and five other commissioners amid a climate of intimidation, as illustrated by the October 2024 NHRC report detailing surges in crimes like mob violence, rape, and political harassment.
The situation has escalated to a point where reporting factual issues seems perilous for NHRC members, with RRAG Director Suhas Chakma likening the scenario to the dismantling of Afghanistan’s Human Rights Commission under the Taliban. Chakma highlighted the broader context, pointing out that on August 10, 2024, a mob besieged Bangladesh’s Supreme Court, leading to the resignation of Chief Justice Obaidul Hassan and five senior judges. Additionally, on October 16, 12 High Court judges were dismissed following student-led protests demanding their removal.
Chakma argued that amidst such instability, NHRC members in Bangladesh stand vulnerable, paralleling how the judiciary has been undermined under the interim government. This, RRAG contends, leaves victims of human rights abuses—such as women, children, indigenous communities, and religious minorities—without the crucial protection usually offered by independent bodies like the NHRC.
The RRAG emphasizes the importance of GANHRI taking decisive action against this unprecedented erosion of human rights oversight in Bangladesh. Their call echoes past measures taken by GANHRI against other nations, such as the July 2022 suspension of Afghanistan’s Human Rights Commission and the July 2023 suspension of commissions in Myanmar, Niger, and Russia. The appeal underlines the critical need for GANHRI’s intervention to restore institutional protection for human rights in Bangladesh.
