Furious NEHU Students Ignite Protests: Effigies of VC and Officials Set Ablaze in Meghalaya Uprising
At North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU), student protests have intensified with an indefinite hunger strike marked by burning effigies of Vice-Chancellor Professor Prabha Shankar Shukla and other senior officials. This display of discontent occurred on the Shillong campus, drawing participation from a broad spectrum of students dissatisfied with the administration’s unmet demands.
The protests began due to grievances that the student body feels have been ignored, prompting them to commence a hunger strike on November 5 and enforce a complete lockdown of the university from November 6. The students’ demands include the dismissal of the Registrar and Deputy Registrar, the appointment of a Pro Vice-Chancellor for the Tura campus, timely PGSU elections, and better basic amenities.
During this tense period, healthcare workers were on-site to provide medical aid to hunger-striking members of the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU-NEHU Unit) and the NEHU Students Union (NEHUSU), underscoring the serious nature of their protest. While Vice-Chancellor Shukla attempted to mitigate the discontent through a letter, urging the cessation of both the hunger strike and campus lockdown, his efforts were met with resistance. In his communication, Shukla recognized the grievances against the Registrar and Deputy Registrar, stating, “I understand that there are some issues raised against these individuals by the student community, demanding the removal of the Registrar and Deputy Registrar.”
Nonetheless, the Vice-Chancellor’s appeal did not quell the unrest; instead, it was met with vehement refusal and demands for his resignation. The students’ actions reflect a profound dissatisfaction with the administration and a determination to effect change within the institution’s governance. This unfolding situation at NEHU highlights significant unrest and the palpable urgency for dialogue and resolution between the university authorities and the student body.
