Exciting Launch: Ri-Bhoi District Administration Unveils Inspiring Jal Utsav Campaign
NONGPOH, Nov 6: In a concerted effort to prioritize water conservation, the district administration of Ri-Bhoi, in alliance with multiple departments, launched the Jal Utsav campaign. Unveiled on Wednesday, the initiative saw collaboration from the Public Health Engineering (PHE) department, Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM) Ri-Bhoi, Water Resources, Soil and Water Conservation, District Horticulture, District School Education, and District Agriculture offices. The campaign’s inauguration took place at the Nongpoh Urban Water Supply Scheme’s treatment plant in Lewmawlong, where notable figures like Deputy Commissioner of Ri-Bhoi, Abhilash Barawal, and State Nodal Officer from NITI Aayog, Iffat A Parveen, addressed attendees.
Responding to a national call for heightened water awareness by the Prime Minister, Jal Utsav is set to make water conservation a household norm across the country. During the launch, Deputy Commissioner Barawal stressed the critical need for sustainable water management, especially in regions prone to water scarcity. The event underscored the value of water as a cornerstone of sustainable development, urging collective and strategic action.
Participants, including district department heads, students, Self-Help Groups (SHGs) members, village leaders, and community representatives, pledged their commitment to water conservation. The ceremony also included the release of a fact sheet and a symbolic Jal Bandhan, where attendees tied a Sacred Thread on water assets, emphasizing shared responsibility in preserving this vital resource.
Central to the campaign is the engagement of school students as water management ambassadors. Through educational initiatives and practical activities, students are encouraged to champion water conservation in their households and communities. Additionally, Jal Utsav aims to highlight best practices and technological advancements in water management, advocating for their adoption beyond Ri-Bhoi, throughout other regions facing similar challenges. This initiative marks a vital step towards securing water sustainability for future generations in Meghalaya and beyond.
