Assam CM Himanta Strongly Dismisses Devastating Tree Felling Allegations for Guwahati Flyover Construction
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma addressed allegations regarding tree felling in Guwahati for the Chandmari flyover construction. Sarma clarified that there was no intention to cut trees for the project. Instead, adjustments to the architectural plan will make the flyover narrower to accommodate existing trees. He accused some groups of leveraging environmental concerns for political advantage ahead of elections, distinguishing between protestors who genuinely care for the environment and those he sees as anti-development.
The Chief Minister explained that the original plan was to transplant any trees obstructing the construction, but even this measure has now been deemed unnecessary—no trees will be cut or relocated. Another issue arose regarding a statue of Lakshminath Bezbaruah, a notable Assamese literary figure. Sarma assured that the statue would remain untouched, with the flyover constructed above it. Bezbaruah is renowned for his contributions to modern Assamese literature, often hailed as the “Father of Assamese short stories.”
Addressing concerns about the project’s timeline in relation to the 2026 state elections, Sarma confirmed that the construction is set for completion before the elections. He recently inspected the site, noting minor modifications to the flyover’s length and alignment, asserting that these changes will not affect the project’s timely execution.
This approach aims to balance development with environmental conservation while countering any political narratives attempting to exploit the situation. Sarma’s firm stance emphasizes environmentally conscious development and timely project execution, engaging the public and stakeholders as the construction progresses.
