Urgent Plea: Discover the Alarming Cracks on Puri Jagannath Temple’s Boundary Wall, Experts Demand Immediate ASI Survey
The Jagannath Temple in Puri, Odisha, a renowned 12th-century shrine, has approached the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) for a scientific assessment after detecting cracks in its boundary wall, known as the ‘Meghanad Pacheri’. The ASI, responsible for the temple’s preservation, received a formal request from the Shree Jagannath Temple Administration (SJTA) Chief Administrator, Arabinda Padhee, urging immediate repairs and restoration efforts. Additionally, measures have been implemented by the temple’s civil construction wing to prevent water leakage.
Padhee emphasized the necessity of upgrading the drainage system at Anand Bazaar, a significant area within the temple where devotees receive ‘prasad’. The SJTA has already begun a tender process for this purpose. Odisha Law Minister, Prithviraj Harichandan, highlighted the urgency of the situation and confirmed that repairs are set to commence promptly to avert further deterioration. He attributed these structural issues to past construction activities around the temple complex conducted by the previous state government led by the BJD.
Meanwhile, a separate investigation has concluded that there are no secret chambers within the temple’s treasury, the Ratna Bhandar. This discovery follows an intensive survey conducted in mid-September by experts from both the ASI and the National Geophysical Research Institute (NGRI), according to the Indian Express. The committee’s findings are expected to be submitted shortly to the temple administration, dispelling longstanding myths about undiscovered chambers.
These developments underscore the ongoing dedication to preserving the temple’s structural integrity and historic significance while ensuring the safety and accessibility of its sacred spaces for devotees and visitors alike.
