Brutal Late-Night Attack on BJP Worker Sparks Urgent Police Probe
Raha, Nov 3: Tensions are escalating in the Samaguri constituency ahead of the upcoming by-elections as political violence persists. On Saturday night, Akbar Ali, a BJP worker, was critically injured in an attack by unidentified individuals in the Kachakhaiti area. He was ambushed while returning home from the market on his motorcycle. Ali received immediate medical help at Kawaimari Hospital, later being transferred to Nagaon Medical College for further treatment. The police have initiated an investigation responding to a complaint from Ali’s family.
This attack follows the recent death of another BJP worker, Bipul Saikia, who succumbed to injuries from a pre-poll clash allegedly involving Congress and BJP supporters on October 15. Police have registered a case (no. 269/24) and are looking into Saikia’s death, but a summoned suspect is yet to be questioned.
The political climate in Samaguri is charged, with accusations flying between the BJP and Congress over the increase in pre-poll violence. A BJP leader, preferring anonymity, criticized Congress for allegedly blaming EVMs in anticipation of losing ground. At the same time, Congress has appealed to the Election Commission of India to transfer the local Superintendent of Police, claiming that fair elections are not possible under the current administration.
On the ground, around 500 ulemas, along with imams and muazzins from Samaguri’s madrassas, publicly backed the BJP, condemning the Congress for fostering communal discord and creating detention centers in Assam. In an intriguing twist, they also applauded the BJP government for demolishing madrassas built on government land.
With the election atmosphere heating up and both major parties lobbying for support, the coming weeks are crucial in determining the political landscape of Samaguri.
