Exciting Milestone: State Cabinet Triumphantly Approves Meluri as the 17th District!
The government of Nagaland has announced a significant administrative change by approving the bifurcation of Phek district to establish Meluri sub-division as the state’s 17th district. This decision, made during a Cabinet meeting on October 30, marks a notable development for the Pochury tribe, the primary inhabitants of Meluri. The move comes after persistent efforts by the Pochury community, which has long campaigned for district status, submitting numerous appeals to the state government since 2021.
At a press briefing, Minister for Power and Parliamentary Affairs KG Kenye confirmed the decision, expressing that the Cabinet has positively acknowledged the longstanding demand of the Pochury people. The Minister of Environment, Forest, and Climate Change shared similar sentiments, highlighting the significance of this development. Z. Nyusietho Nyuthe, Advisor for New & Renewable Energy and Nagaland State Disaster Management Authority, welcomed the decision, attributing it to divine grace and the leadership of the Chief Minister and the Cabinet.
Nyuthe further emphasized that the Pochury Hoho, leading the community’s efforts, was instrumental in garnering support, also noting the backing of the Chakhesang Public Organisation for the creation of Meluri district. The official recognition of Meluri as a district awaits further government notification to finalize the operational procedures.
According to the 2011 census, the Pochury tribe comprises approximately 22,558 individuals across 31 recognized villages. It is estimated that the population has now exceeded 30,000. The new district will span an area of roughly 1,010 square kilometers, signaling a new era of administrative autonomy for the Pochury community. The Pochury Hoho has heralded the decision as a “red-letter day,” marking a historic achievement for the tribe. This development reflects the state’s responsiveness to the aspirations of its communities, paving the way for targeted developmental efforts in Meluri.
