Heartwarming Rescue: Assam Infant Sold for Rs 30,000 Saved in Dhemaji District
In a troubling incident in Assam’s Dhemaji district, a poverty-stricken laborer allegedly sold his 25-day-old daughter for Rs 30,000. The sale prompted swift action from the Child Welfare Committee (CWC), which rescued the infant from the home of a local doctor, officials reported on Tuesday.
Rupali Deka Borgohain, the chairperson of the district CWC, confirmed that a formal complaint was filed at Silapathar police station against the newborn’s parents, the buyer, and the intermediaries involved in the illicit transaction. According to the complaint, the infant was born on October 4 at Assam Medical College and Hospital in Dibrugarh. The parents, Budhiman Borah and Sabita Borah, reportedly fled the hospital shortly after her birth.
Borgohain revealed that the family was in dire financial straits, with the father being a daily wage laborer. An investigation by Child Helpline in Dhemaji traced the parents and ordered them to appear before the CWC, which they failed to do. Despite this, police found that the parents eventually retrieved the child from the hospital and sold her to Pegu Sohoria and her husband for the sum of Rs 30,000.
The authorities were able to locate and rescue the child following a tip-off that led them to Dr. Chandrajit Doley’s residence in Silapathar. The investigation also identified two individuals, Bubul Borah and Dilip Saikia, as key players in the sale of the infant. Official inquiries into the case are ongoing as police continue to unravel the network of those involved.
This incident highlights the distressing issue of child trafficking among vulnerable populations in the region, calling attention to the urgent need for socioeconomic interventions and effective law enforcement to protect children from such exploitation.
