Urgent Victory: WJH’s Bold Ban on Foreign-Made Firecrackers Sparks Hope and Safety
In an effort to ensure safety and reduce pollution during Diwali, the West Jaiñtia Hills administration in Meghalaya has banned the sale and use of foreign-made firecrackers. Under a directive aligned with Section 163 BNNS, only licensed vendors are allowed to sell firecrackers, provided they meet the standards set by the Central Pollution Control Board. Additionally, firecrackers emitting noise beyond 125 decibels are strictly forbidden.
Specific measures have been introduced to protect sensitive zones, with the bursting of crackers prohibited within 100 meters of areas like hospitals, educational institutions, courts, and religious sites that are designated as silent zones.
In order to balance cultural celebrations with public safety, the administration has also regulated the timing for firework displays, allowing them only between 8 pm and 10 pm on Diwali. This thoughtful approach reflects a commitment to preserving the festive spirit while prioritizing environmental and public health.
