As the 2024 US Elections approach the critical voting day on November 5, an intriguing development unfolds in Telangana’s Bhadradri Korhagudem, India. Locals there have organized an elaborate 11-day Hindu ritual, a ‘havan,’ to support Republican candidate Kamala Harris’s presidential bid. This grand ceremony, known as the ‘Sri Raja Shyamalamba Sahita Shata Chandi Purvaka Sudarshana Maha Yagam,’ is spearheaded by the Shyamala Gopalan Foundation at the H Convention in Palvancha, and is set to conclude this Wednesday.
The ritual has been performed by 40 Vedic pundits, with an expected attendance of nearly 7,000 people on its final day. Organizers claim that the ‘yagam’ has boosted Harris’s support since it began. Nalla Suresh Reddy, a key organizer, emphasized the role of divine grace in the electoral outcome, expressing hope for Harris’s victory. Reddy mentions that the event also serves daily meals to between 500 and 1,000 people as part of its proceedings.
Kamala Harris, born in Oakland, California, to an Indian mother and Jamaican father, has made her ethnic background part of her campaign narrative. She graduated from Howard University and has built her campaign around supporting women’s abortion rights, pledging to create a citizenship pathway for illegal immigrants, and proposing an “opportunity economy” plan.
