Trapped Lives: Urgent Plea from Gaza’s Kamal Adwan Hospital Amid Intense Israeli Siege
At least 600 individuals, including patients, companions, and staff, are trapped at Kamal Adwan Hospital in Beit Lahiya as it remains under siege by Israeli forces, the Palestinian health ministry reports. The Israeli military raided the hospital, ordering patients into the main courtyard and conducting mass arrests. Tragically, two children in intensive care have died due to generator failures and targeted oxygen supply, exposing the critical situation within.
The besieged facility houses 195 patients and 70 medical personnel, and its functionality has been severely compromised. The incident followed a tank attack that damaged the intensive care unit and left the hospital facing critical shortages of medical resources. The World Health Organization Chief, Tedros Ghebreyesus, expressed grave concerns, stating the situation is “deeply disturbing,” with a constant influx of trauma cases overwhelming the remaining facilities.
The surrounding military presence, comprising dozens of Israeli tanks, has exacerbated the conditions, while fires have broken out, complicating evacuation efforts. The hospital finds itself at the brink of a humanitarian disaster, with one patient reportedly dying every hour due to the ongoing assault.
In a related incident, the Indonesian Hospital in Beit Lahiya was rendered inoperative after being set on fire by Israeli soldiers, causing a power outage. Evacuees from the Indonesian Hospital were relocated to the already overstretched Kamal Adwan Hospital. The United Nations has been unable to gain access to northern Gaza hospitals, despite urgent pleas to deliver humanitarian aid.
The UN Human Rights Office has voiced increasing concern over what it describes as the Israeli military’s unlawful interference with humanitarian aid and actions leading to forced displacement, highlighting heightened tensions and dire conditions in northern Gaza.
