Meghalaya Updates: Speaker’s BOP Visit, Educational Projects, and Key Developments
Speaker Thomas A. Sangma recently visited the Border Outpost (BOP) Baghmara of the 200 Bn BSF in South Garo Hills, where he engaged with BSF troops. Commandant Vinod Yadav briefed Sangma on the challenges and achievements in the region. Sangma lauded the BSF’s dedication to securing the border and emphasized the support from Meghalaya’s people.
Meanwhile, the Niksamsao Garo Community Organisation has urged the government to resume stalled construction projects for Mahendraganj Science and Commerce College and Ampati Engineering College. These projects, approved under the NLCPR Scheme for Rs 36.31 crore and Rs 41 crore respectively, have been pending since 2017.
In South Garo Hills, Governor CH Vijayashankar virtually laid the foundation for a new Deputy Commissioner’s Office, marking a milestone for the district’s growth. The Rs 14.98 crore project was praised by Education Minister Rakkam A Sangma for addressing a 32-year need for administrative infrastructure.
In other developments, the BSF Meghalaya Frontier thwarted a smuggling attempt along the Indo-Bangladesh border, seizing cosmetic items worth Rs 12 lakh. The operation resulted in the confiscation of 12 cartons of ointment cream by the 4th Battalion.
Furthermore, activist Greneth M Sangma has appealed to Education Minister Rakkam A Sangma to upgrade two South Garo Hills schools into higher secondary facilities, addressing issues of inadequate resources and the necessity for local matriculation centers.
Lastly, IIM Shillong has signed an MoU with Burgundy School of Business, France, facilitating academic exchanges and collaborations. The agreement aims to enhance educational pathways through student exchanges, dual degrees, and joint research projects, promoting cross-cultural understanding and shared expertise.
