Discover the Allure of Tripura’s Agarwood: Japan’s Enthusiastic Delegates Eager for a Thriving Trade Collaboration
Agartala, Oct. 23: A Japanese delegation, joined by senior officials from the Indian government and the Tripura Forest Department, visited agarwood-based industrial units in Kadamtala, North Tripura, to enhance bilateral cooperation in the sector. The All Tripura Agar Association, representing local agarwood cultivators, played a crucial role in facilitating this visit.
The Japanese team, including Kei Otsuki of the Embassy of Japan in India and JICA’s Hidenobu Fujiwara, began their day with a tour of the agarwood market at Dharmanagar. They proceeded to Kadamtala plantations, participating in the ceremonial planting of five agarwood seedlings, and visited North Phulbari to review the Maman wood, chips, and agar oil industry.
Other attendees included JICA India’s Development Specialist Nishtha Vengurlekar, Tripura JICA Project’s Pravin Agrawal, and Agartala Forest Academy’s Gautam Das, along with local leaders like Mihir Ranjan Nath and key representatives from the All Tripura Agar Association.
The Japanese visitors praised Tripura’s agarwood industry for its international acclaim and export potential. The Kadamtala area is recognized as the largest agarwood producer in Tripura, contributing significantly to India’s export market. Anfar Ali, the Secretary of the All Tripura Agar Association, emphasized the vital support from both central and state governments, highlighting the global interest in Tripura’s agarwood sector. He announced a proposed investment of Rs 400 crore to bolster the industry’s growth further.
Currently, Tripura’s agarwood products are exported to major Indian cities and the Middle East, and Ali expressed optimism that with sustained government support, global market access will improve. The visit from Japan underscores the international recognition of Tripura’s thriving agarwood industry and its promising future in the global export landscape.
