Outraged: JWC Lodges Complaint with MHRC After Being Barred from Crucial Cement Plant Hearing
In Jowai on October 23, the Jaintia Women Council (JWC) of East Jaintia Hills District filed a formal complaint with the Meghalaya Human Rights Commission (MHRC) in Shillong. This complaint is in response to incidents surrounding a public hearing on October 18 regarding the proposed Meghatop Cement factory in Wahiajer Village. The Council members requested and received permission from the Deputy Commissioner to participate in the hearing. However, upon arrival, they were reportedly prevented from entering by both a mob and the police, who allegedly used force to bar their entry.
The JWC further reports that a traffic blockade at Umtyra delayed their arrival at the venue. The Council views these actions as a calculated attempt by the district administration to suppress their voices and infringe on their constitutional rights to free speech and expression. They express concerns about what they describe as a “dictatorship” atmosphere, contrary to the principles of a democratic government. The JWC is urging the state Human Rights Commission to intervene to ensure justice and uphold democratic processes in the district.
