Honoring Heroes: Unforgettable Police Commemoration Day in the Heart of Garo Hills
On Monday, the Garo Hills region observed Police Commemoration Day with solemn ceremonies honoring the sacrifices made by police personnel. This annual event marks the memory of the police officers who were martyred in the line of duty, particularly remembering the ten Indian policemen who fell on October 21, 1959, at Hot Spring in Ladakh during a confrontation with the Chinese Army.
In South West Garo Hills, the commemoration took place at the Superintendent of Police (SP) office, where officers paid tribute by observing a minute of silence and offering a gun salute. SP Billy Graham Marak highlighted the brave sacrifices made by the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) during the 1959 incident, emphasizing the ongoing commitment of police personnel to ensuring community safety.
Simultaneously, in East Garo Hills, a ceremony was held at the Williamnagar Police Reserve. Here, police officers gathered to pay their respects, with Shok Parade Commander Richmond R Marak leading the observance, which included another gun salute. Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Anthony Ch Momin spoke at the occasion, reiterating the valor and dedication of the police force in serving the nation.
Dignitaries present included Deputy Superintendent of Police (Crime) Subir Sangma, DSP Howard K. Marak, and representatives from the 5th MLP Battalion and Civil Defence Home Guard. These events serve as a poignant reminder of the risks faced by law enforcement officers and the dedication they exhibit daily to protect and serve the community.
Such observances are essential not only to honor past sacrifices but also to inspire current and future officers by highlighting the valor and resilience that define the police force. As these ceremonies concluded, the message was clear: the memory of fallen heroes lives on, and their legacy continues to inspire those who follow in their footsteps.
