Honoring Visionary Designer: Machilipatnam’s Pingali Venkaiah Medical College Transforms Healthcare
The Andhra Pradesh government has officially renamed the Government Medical College in Machilipatnam to honor Sri Pingali Venkaiah, the architect of the Indian national flag. The institution will now be known as Sri Pingali Venkaiah Government Medical College. This decision, as described in a government order issued by Special Chief Secretary M.T. Krishna Babu, came from a proposal by the Director of Medical Education and aims to honor Venkaiah’s lasting legacy and fulfill a long-awaited wish of the Machilipatnam populace.
Pingali Venkaiah, born in Bhatlapenumarru near Machilipatnam in 1876, was a multifaceted individual, known for his work as a farmer, geologist, and lecturer at Andhra National College. His ambition to design an Indian national flag culminated in a booklet he published in 1916, which contained over 30 potential flag designs. Venkaiah presented his version of the flag to Mahatma Gandhi during an All India Congress Committee session in 1921. Despite his pivotal role, Venkaiah’s contributions were largely forgotten until recently, when efforts began to recognize his legacy.
Nicknamed ‘Japan Venkaiah’ for his fluency in Japanese and ‘Patti Venkaiah’ for his research on Cambodia Cotton, he passed away in 1963. Notably, in 2009, a postage stamp was released in his honor, and Vijayawada’s All India Radio station was named after him in 2014. In 2021, his name was proposed for the Bharat Ratna by then Chief Minister Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy. This renaming of the medical college is another step in celebrating and preserving Pingali Venkaiah’s remarkable contributions to India’s history.
