Shocking Dismay: Urgent Call for Revamping TNSTC’s Deteriorating Buildings
At a memorial event marking the seventh anniversary of the tragic roof collapse at the Poraiyar bus depot, the CITU and AITUC unions of the Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation (TNSTC) Kumbakonam Division voiced their concerns over the “poor condition” of TNSTC-owned buildings. The accident had claimed the lives of nine employees. During a gate meeting at the Karanthai bus depot in Thanjavur, union representatives urged that the Corporation’s headquarters in Kumbakonam and its 21 depots undergo regular annual inspections and maintenance. Key issues highlighted included roof seepage at Thanjavur’s bus depots, the transformation of Orathanadu and Thiruvaiyaru depots into sludgy areas post-rain, and the need for rebuilding old structures. Furthermore, they advocated for extending compassionate employment benefits to the families of the nine deceased workers, similar to provisions made for employees’ kin who joined after April 1, 2003.
