Urgent Cyclone Alert: IMD Warns of Intense Downpours in Odisha and West Bengal Amid Looming Low-Pressure Threat!
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a significant weather alert regarding the formation of a cyclonic circulation over the Andaman Sea, anticipated to develop into a low-pressure area within 24 hours. This meteorological development could potentially impact coastal regions of north Andhra Pradesh, Odisha, and West Bengal in the coming week. According to the IMD, the current cyclonic circulation over the north Andaman Sea is expected to evolve into a depression by October 22 and further intensify into a cyclonic storm by October 23, in the east-central Bay of Bengal, before moving towards the Odisha-West Bengal coasts by October 24.
Heavy rainfall warnings are in effect for several regions. Very heavy rainfall is predicted in South Interior Karnataka and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. Additional rainfall is expected today across Gujarat, Konkan, Goa, Madhya Maharashtra, Coastal and North Interior Karnataka, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Rayalaseema, and Andhra Pradesh. The IMD has specifically noted the potential for severe cyclonic storm formation, with Odisha likely to experience heavy rainfall from October 23, with some coastal areas anticipating up to 30 cm of rain on October 24-25.
Wind advisories are also in place: the Andaman Sea will likely face winds up to 55 kmph until October 21. East-central Bay of Bengal winds could reach speeds up to 100 kmph by October 24, while the north Bay of Bengal could experience gusts up to 120 kmph from October 24 to the morning of October 25. Fishermen are urged to return to shore by October 21. The IMD has issued an orange alert for the Andaman and Nicobar Islands and a yellow alert for several states, including Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and coastal Andhra Pradesh.
