Relief and Hope: Tripura District Rebounds After Violence with Government Aid
Agartala, July 17: The Tripura government has pledged Rs 1.60 crore in compensation to 166 families affected by the recent ethnic violence in Ganda Twisa, Dhalai District, officials said on Wednesday. The unrest erupted after the death of Parameshwar Reang, a tribal college student, who died from injuries sustained in an assault on July 7.
The violent aftermath on July 12 led to widespread arson and looting, damaging over 40 houses, 30 shops, and numerous vehicles. Around 300 villagers sought refuge in special camps following the chaos in Ganda Twisa, located 130 km southeast of Agartala.
A senior official announced that the government has sanctioned Rs 6 lakh to Parameshwar Reang’s father, Kharagaram Reang, and Rs 1.54 crore for 165 affected families. Each family has already received an interim relief of Rs 25,000, pending a detailed assessment of the damage for further financial assistance.
Efforts to support displaced families include regular aid and the establishment of health camps. Since July 12, Dhalai District Magistrate Saju Vaheed A., Superintendent of Police Avinash Rai, and other senior officials have frequently visited Ganda Twisa to monitor the situation.
A four-member BJP delegation, led by Social Welfare and Social Education Minister Tinku Roy, visited the violence-hit area on Monday but faced strong backlash from residents. Among the grievances, an elderly villager reported that 11 wedding ceremonies had to be canceled due to the violence.
The ongoing efforts aim to restore normalcy and support the affected community through immediate relief and long-term assistance.
