Agartala, Oct 18: In a significant development, a local court in Tripura has placed five police personnel on a three-day police remand following allegations of custodial torture leading to the death of Badal Tripura. The incident unfolded last Friday and involved a sub-inspector, a constable, and three Special Police Officers (SPOs), all of whom were promptly suspended and subsequently arrested as public protests erupted outside Manu Bazar police station.
The accused, identified as SI Premjit Roy, Constable Raj Kumar Tripura, and SPOs Thailach Mog, Rengu Mog, and Shyamal Das, face serious charges following preliminary investigations. They appeared before the Sabroom Subdivisional Court on Friday, leading to their remand.
Badal Tripura, accused of stealing rubber scraps, suffered severe beating in custody despite no formal theft complaint against him. He was detained under the Tripura Police Act for alleged drunken behavior. This tragic incident drew critiques from various quarters, including Leader of Opposition Jitendra Choudhuri, who comforted the bereaved family in South Tripura’s Kaladhepa village. He urged the government to provide financial aid to the family, as Badal was their sole breadwinner, leaving behind an elderly father, a wife, and three daughters.
Choudhuri lambasted the police for their brutality and criticized medical personnel for discharging Badal despite his deteriorating condition. He alleged that political interference prevented necessary medical escalation, possibly costing Badal his life. Labeling the incident as “state-sponsored murder,” Choudhuri raised concerns over the inefficacy of health schemes and criticized Tripura’s law and order situation. He claimed systemic corruption and political pressure impede fair investigations, citing recent violent incidents in the region.
This case stands as a grim marker of alleged police brutality and political influence, calling into question the integrity of law enforcement and governance in Tripura.
